Some tourists only think of Kimberley as the site of the Big Hole……..on a visit organized by Experience Northern Cape – I found that Kimberley has so much more to offer.

Firstly, it has some amazing museums and galleries The Mcgregor Museum is an enlightening multi-cultural museum. Considered to one of the finest museums in South Africa. Collections include natural and cultural history, rock art, paleontology, an important exhibition on the liberation struggle…and much more: https://www.kimberley.co.za/places/kimberley/attractions/mcgregor-museum/

The Duncan Cronin Gallery houses the acclaimed Thandabantu Exhibition a breath-taking display of early 20th Century photographs.

Close to Kimberley is The Wildebeest Kuil San Rock Art Centre which offers a very interesting audio visual presentation on the history of the Khoi-san people. A walk reveals many rock art paintings said to be between 1000 and 2000 years old. Our guide gave some fascinating explanations on the meanings of the paintings and their strong spiritual connections.

Of course there is much to see about the Anglo Boer War and the Siege of Kimberley including a visit to the site of the Magersfontein Battle Site and the memorial in the centre of the Town.

Kimberley is synonymous with diamonds and The Big Hole Museum is well worth a visit – there are two-hour guided tours daily.

We stayed in the superb 5-star Oleander Guest House in Carrington Street. This street has a number of beautifully restored Victorian and Edwardian residences – a few of which have been turned into elegant guest houses.

Enjoy the Belgravia Historical Guided Walk featuring 33 of Kimberley’s historical buildings.

For more information: visit the Experience Northern Cape website
Our stay in Kimberley brings to an end our wonderful 4,500 km’s 10-day road trip around the Northern Cape Province.

Our thanks to Experience Northern Cape for hosting us.

Hope you all enjoyed our Posts!

Very few South Africans know much about the Anglo War Concentration camps established as a result of General Kitchener’s “Scorched earth” policy during 1901 and 1902. During the war over 160,000 women and children were interned in concentration camps and many thousands died of starvation or disease.
