The Journey Continues ... Sutherland

The next stop on Janet and Derek’s Northern Cape trip is a visit to Sutherland in the Karoo.

Renowned as the coldest dorp in South Africa, Sutherland is the STAR GAZING capital of the South Africa – a most interesting place to visit – only two and a half hours from Cape Town on the N1 and then on a tar road. Ideal for a weekend break from City life!

STERLAND, just out of town is one of the must-see attractions. The owner Jurg Wagener is a very enthusiastic Star Gazer. At 20h00 each night he gives a very fascinating talk on the Constellations and then you can view the incredible night sky through his big telescopes.

Visitors can also see the South African Astronomical Observatory – SALT – the largest optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. Tours at 10h30 and 14h30 must be pre-booked. The Sutherland Planetarium offers very unique sun-gazing experiences.

From May to October tourists can expect icy cold weather, plenty of snow and brilliant night skies.
Sutherland is certainly a town worth considering for at least a relaxing two-night stay with quaint shops, a good selection of Bed & Breakfasts and self-catering options as well as restaurants serving the best mutton in the Karoo (so they say!!).

For 5-star accommodation look no further than the superb Rogge Cloof Game Reserve & Wine Estate situated 20kms from Sutherland on the road to Matjiesfontein.
