The Journey Continues ... Hondeklipbaai

Derek and Janet’s epic road trip around the Northern Cape continues. After a delicious fresh  “catch of the day”  seafood buffet at Hout Hoop(woodpile in English!) and very comfortable accommodation in their en-suite guest rooms … we head out South along the Diamond highway towards Hondeklipbaai (dogstone bay!)

The road is a good tar road for most of the way then gravel into Hondeklipbaai.

Along this coast road through the Namakwa Park you can see a number of huge diggings for diamond mining  which is still taking place on the shores.

Hondeklip Baai is a small seaside resort famous for great fishing. A few bed and breakfast places and  really friendly locals and fisherman on their small boats out in the bay pubs and restaurants.

Then we head on the very bumpy gravel road for 80 kms to Garies – We drive along  vast open stark terrain where you can see forever  but  then over steep mountain passes and the occasional farmhouse with a patch of greenery…

Namakwaland is certainly a fascinatingly unusual part of South Africa – an unforgettable scenery – a rugged beauty – that is well worth the journey from Gauteng (about 2000kms) or just a few hours from Cape Town on the road to Namibia.
