Derek Houston spent the weekend in the lovely town of Moshi at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Here he is seen at the iconic Union Cafe the original head quarters of the Kilimanjaro Native Cooperative Union, representing tens of thousands of coffee smallholders, it’s all about the coffee – the co-operative’s own beans are roasted on-site.
Apart from their coffee their avocados are fantastic. A plate of avocado for just a dollar. The slopes of Kilimanjaro are famous for the “green gold of Tanzania”. More than 2000 local farmers in the Siha district of Kilimanjaro are now growing organic avocados with over 30 million tons of organic Hass avocados exported from Tanzania annually.
